Step into the modern adaptations of Greek myths with an epic, sensual and bold retelling written by Tony Award winning artist Mary Zimmerman. This passionate tale reimagines classical stories about Midas, Orpheus and Aphrodite, among others, in ways that highlight the struggles and joys of being mortal.

Humanity is at the center of this piece, examining the redemptive power of the ancient myths we have retold for centuries. Gods and mortals alike endure heartbreak, epic conflict and love in this larger-than-life recount. This adaptation brings the classic Ovid poem of the same name to life revealing juxtapositions and parallels between the ancient and the contemporary.

Myths, so to say, are public dreams; dreams are private myths.

 – Joseph Campbell, Myths to Live By

Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman is a contemporary adaptation of Ovid’s Latin narrative poem, originally penned in Rome during the first century. This play weaves together a tapestry of timeless tales, and our performance will take you on a journey through the ethereal realms of love, transformation, and imagination. We invite you to experience each story with the same curiosity and wonder of a child.

Ancient myths, or what Joseph Campbell deemed “public dreams,” are more than mere tales; they serve as expressions of creativity that transcend both time and culture. Our production aims to foster a profound sense of communitas with you, the audience, as we embark on a collective exploration of the human experience. Communitas, a Latin term, signifies the feeling of unity that emerges among individuals who collectively experience something meaningful. Partake with us in the collective ritual of storytelling by immersing yourself in the emotions of our characters and witnessing the remarkable powers of poetry.

Dreams, on the other hand, or “private myths,” can be viewed as internal echoes of the public narratives that shape our worldviews. You'll observe that many of our creative choices are meant to evoke rather than represent, leaving space for your own unique interpretation. Water, a central element in Zimmerman's piece and our stage design, carries profound symbolism: does it represent change or continuity, life or death, chaos or order? Unleash your imagination as you make meaning of these public dreams; in doing so, you might discover the private myths that lie within.
