About the speakers

UCF alumni Anna Eskamani ’12 ’15MNM ’15MPA and Carlos Guillermo Smith ’03 serve as members of the Florida House of Representatives. Representatives Eskamani and Guillermo Smith have been a voice in advocating the importance of the arts in Florida, both culturally and economically.

An Orlando native, Representative Eskamani earned two bachelor degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies and Political Science, and two master’s degrees in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management. She was recently named one of Orlando Magazine‘s 50 Most Powerful People and is a recipient of the 2016 UCF Alumni 30 Under 30 Award. Anna is the first Iranian-American to serve in the Florida Legislature and is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Affairs at UCF.

Representative Guillermo Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UCF in 2003 and is an advocate for Florida’s working families and students. He was elected in 2016 and subsequently re-elected in 2018 to serve House District 49. Working for Equality Florida, the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBTQ community, Carlos made history with his election becoming Florida’s first openly-LGBTQ Latinx state lawmaker.
